ERAS: Elementary Reading Attitude Survey
The Elementary Reading Attitude Survey is a tool designed to measure a student's attitude and perception of reading. The survey was created in a pictorial format because of its natural appeal and easy comprehensibility for young students. Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield provided four poses of Garfield ranging from very happy to very upset to be utilized for the survey. This survey of twenty questions can be completed in a matter of minutes instantly illustrating the student's attitude toward recreational and academic reading.
Interview & ERAS Reflection:
This past week, I began working with Taaliyah Taylor, a fourth grade student at Patel Elementary. I arrived at the school just as students were being dismissed for the day. I was surprised that the school administration had asked me to come right during dismissal as it was a bit chaotic in the office. A few minutes later, the office receptionist walked me to the cafeteria where the after school HOST program was held. One of the HOST instructors introduced me to Taaliyah and informed me we could work in the teacher’s lounge where it would be a little quieter. During the interview, Taaliyah and I were able to get to know each other better. I would ask Taaliyah a few questions and then allow her to ask me a few questions of her choosing. This created a relaxed, causal, and stress-free environment. After we completed the interview portion of the case study, I administered the first assessment to gauge her attitude toward reading.
The results indicated that Taaliyah was in the sixty-ninth percentile for her overall score, receiving the same number of points in both the academic and recreational categories. Even though she received a raw score of thirty-one in both categories, her percentiles ranks were considerably different. She scored in the sixtieth percentile for recreational and the seventieth percentile for academic. One conclusion that could be made from this data is that the books being chosen in the classroom are very engaging and interesting, while the books of her personal choosing are not as enjoyable to her. I feel it would be beneficial to analyze at the types of books she enjoys in class to find similar books for leisure reading. Even though she scored higher in academic, it is clear Taaliyah enjoys and is passionate about reading both in school and in her leisure time.
